Can anybody help me figure out a problem i am having with my farmall m. It will not run unless you spray gas or starting fluid in air inlet. I have already had the carburater cleaned and even tryed a new one and it just wont pick up on the gas. Please help.

Maybe your starting fluid caused an intake manifold gasket to pop. Try having someone spray a light mist of it toward intake manifold ports. If she smooths out with this mist, you will have found the problem. Be careful. Even WD-40 would work & it would be less explosive.

It may be a bad intake gasket or your throttle valve is not in the notch of the governor linkage.

Will fuel flow into carb?

Could it be a linkage problem?

What effect does the choke have?

Check that gas is getting to the carb, and it's fresh. Also check the float.

How fresh is the gas? if it's over a year old forget it. If the gas is new put your hand over the carb intake if no suction your valves are not sealing off and that could be caused by setting too long because they may be stuck open which is common if you listen you can hear a sucking sound coming from your exhaust pipe while engine is being turned over. This is a very common occurance especially if the exhaust has not been covered up when outside during long periods of not running.

Okay, here it is. I just got through doing the same thing to my 1940 M.. New carb and all. First screw the air mixture screw(the one on top) all the way in, then back it out 1 and 1/2 turns. Next turn the fuel screw (the one on the bottom in front of the carb) all the way in and then back it out three full turns. Now this is very important. Take the bottom bowl off of the carb and on the float there is a little flap on the front side of the carb that keeps the float from going all the way down. bend this down just enough to let the float fall down about 1/2 inch before the flap stops it. This way the float won't go down too far and stick and let your gas overflow out the intake. Now that you have that done, check your oil. If it is overfull, or if is smells the least bit like gas, drain it because it got gas on top of the cylinders from the intake manifold and it washed down the cylinder walls, and you won't get compression, and you won't have any oil up there. take the spark plugs out, and squirt some motor oil onto the top of the pistons, then turn the motor over several times to lubtricate the cylinder walls. Put the plugs back in and turn the gas back on under the tank and chances are , after possibly having to crank it for awhile, it will run like a swiss watch. I don't even have to choke mine now and don
't have to turn the gas off anymore when I shut it off. Hope this helps. Allen
