I'm considering buying a Farmall M or Sm. I know some of the differences but is there any problems with the SM that I should consider before buying a SM over a M. Could some one tell me before a make a mistake and purchase a SM

Thanks

I have farmed with a SM for years. Everthing mentioned sums up the problems I have had also.
Rear end gears are another problem also. The through shaft also is rare. Parts must come from another SM or be bought new and tehy aren't cheap. I would get an M strictly from the parts availabilty side of life.

I like being able to pull the clutch and pressure plate in an M where a SM you can fight and get the clutch plate only without splitting the tractor.

I agree with Mike. I am the proud owner of a Super M, and the brakes were shot when I bought it. If the actuators are okay, they are simple to replace brake pads, but the tractor must be used a minimum once a month otherwise the actuators lock up and then rust and then you have a lot of pedal movement and not a scratch of brake pressure. I had the opportunity to find a pair of nearly brand new actuators in my great uncle's shed in a box that came with his 450. Sold the 450, didn't have a machine that used these brakes, and gave them to me. New pads, new actuators, new tractor. Only true problem I've had. If it has good brakes, use them to keep them in good shape, and perhaps (although ungodly expensive) buy some new pads (they're actually brake plates, when you look at them) and replace the pads, and while you have them apart you can tell if anything is bad. Actuator springs and balls wouldn't be a bad idea, either. The actuator has balls in the middle of it, and springs on he outside. Using a screwdriver as a lever, replacement is easy. The balls will become heat stressed and turn blue, and sometimes rust will pit them and they will work like crap. The actuator may actually be cracked, but if you don't use it as a main farm tractor the largest crack may last 15 years without hampering brake performance. Any other questons ask, because I have been through nearly every nut and bolt on the tractor outside of the transmission and I could probably walk you through any problem. Sorry for the long post, but hopefully I may have at least helped someone else if not you. I kind of tend to go on and on when it comes to my tractor... Thanks.

the brakes are not the greatest on the sm. other than the brakes not being the greatest it is an all around good tractor

I never had a problem with disk brakes, clean and adjusted, they are better than band brakes.
