Clutch Freeplay

Forgive me for this stupid question. When adjusting the clutch pedal for “freeplay,” the IT manual shows that you measure the position of the clutch at the top of its travel and then depressing it downward, there is apparently something that happens at the end of the "freeplay." Is the “freeplay” the distance that the clutch can be moved before the throw out bearing contacts the fingers on the pressure plate? If so can you “feel” when that happens?

Perhaps the adjustment is so out of whack on my tractor that I cannot feel any “freeplay” in the clutch when pressing it down.

Carl: If my memory serves me correctly you are adjusting a 504 with a TA. Just in case the TA adjustment is away off remove the pin from the short linkage between clutch shaft and TA shaft, until you get proper adjustment on the clutch pedal. When the clutch pedal adjustment is correct then adjust the TA as the book describes both the short linkage I just mentioned and the linkage to the TA lever. I agree with scotty on the spring removal as well. Also when checking for free pedal movement use you hand as oposed to your foot, you will feel it hit the release bearing more easily.

Thanks Hugh.

It is a 504 and I tried the clutch adjustment in the IT manual once, but was not sure I got the "freeplay" measurement right since it was hard to feel the free play. Will try it again using my hand to press the clutch pedal and then if I don't improve the situation will replace the clutch.

Thanks again,
Carl.

Carl, You pretty much answered your own question. Im thinking that your clutch return spring is pretty heavy duty, which when you depress the clutch pedal is not giving you the feel of the real freeplay! Try disconnecting the return spring and then see how much pedal movement you have before you start to push the throwout bearing into the clutch fingers.

Thanks Scotty.

I think I'll ttry the clutch pedal/TA adjustment procedure again, without the clutch return spring. When I did it by the book last time, I had difficulty feeling when the bearing hit the fingers.

Carl.
