Farmall A Question

Hello I am currently looking at a farmall A with a loader/plow combo on the front. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with some details. I really don't know much about old tractors and I am looking for one for my father in law as a snow clearing/road grading tractor. Obviously he doesn't want too large of one. We get around 100" of snow per year where I live. Right now he plows with his garden tractor and it takes him awhile to get done. His lane is about 1/2 mile at least.

Anyway would this tractor do well at plowing snow and some light road work in the summers? The one i'm looking at appears to be in ok shape. A 1944 model I believe by serial. Maybe a 43. The hydro pump is on the rear PTO unit. It has dual rear wheels and about 300lb of rear weight. The tin is so so. not that good really but not falling off yet. The nose is mashed in some as well. Obviously Paint is bad. I am just wondering if it is worth it to invest the cash into this machine ($1700). The owner said there are no cracks in the block and no blue smoke but that it does have a weak starter that needs replaced. Tires are average to bad. I think that is all the info I have really. Just looking for some overall opinions as to if its worth the money or not. thanks.

This may seem crazy to all you mid-west folks, but $1500 dollars isn't all that outrageous depending on where you live. Like in my area in Maine, $1500 is the average for a running small letter series tractor (I payed $1350 for my BN).

Now that being said, yours sounds like it's in pretty hard shape, so if you do go that route I would try to work the price down.

Also, if your not in a rush, I would look for something with built in hydraulics, and maybe a bit bigger. I don't know what other's think but maybe a C/SC/200 etc might be a good fit?

(OK, I'll start lurking again, I just felt the need to say something about prices)

First of all, for a $1500ish tractor I'd start looking for an M or a 400 or something. They're a much bigger tractor in horsepower but not much different in physical size. Also a 400 would have live hydraulics and power steering also. Maybe in your area those are big money tractors but in my area( northern Illinois) they can be bought for less money than the little ones. Those little ones are neat but not much good for real work horses.

Mark: Too much money for an A with pto driven hydraulics. That pump on pto will cause grief shifting. You could buy an H with a belly pump and loader for that money, still wouldn't be live hydraulics, but they wouldn't mess up your shifting. The front end on the A is just too light for a loader and a C or SC not much better.

I had a neighbor with a 10 hp walk behind snowblower, 18 hp lawn mowing tractor and a 9 hp troy tiller. 5 years after buying all of this it was worn out and he was getting me to plow his snow and till his garden He had a Cockshutt 20 tractor that he didn't know what to do with except drive it around. I said to him one day why don't you get a plow, harrow and a snow blade for the 20, even a belly mower. I said,"You will buy it all for about half the cost of replacing the other toys."

I would suggest a snow blower over the Farmall A. The A is a great tractor but $1700 seems steep for a machine in the condition you described. For $1300 he could get a 10HP snow blower walk behind and still have his Lawn tractor to scrape the drive.

Too much... for that price you should be able to find something with a three point hitch, and put a snow blower on it. I have no idea how he did 100 inches of snow a year with a garden tractor. I'm in a high snow area too, and by then end of the season, I don't have room to push snow anymore, cuz the berms are too high. I wish I had a blower again...

Dave He has that issue as well. Usually 2 or 3 times a winter (every month or month and 1/2) he has to call his one neighbor down the road that has a Kubota w/loader and he uses that to lift and widen it out a good bit.

Currenly uses a Cub Cadet 1650. Those little devils plow better than any garden tractor on the market today!

If that is too much do any of you have suggestions of what I should look for? I'm trying to stay around $1500ish.

Thanks for the help

You won't get much of a tractor with a 3 point for $1500, unless you find a Super C that someone made a homemade 3 point for . I did, found a C with a homemade 3 point for $800. They are out there, but you'll have to hunt for them. You can put a 3 point on a C or Super C. Or you can pick up an old Ford. Check the Classifieds on this site for an affordable tractor in your area. Another thought is buy a snow blower attachment for your Cub Cadet.
