Dave A;

That Napa price sounds a little high unlees you are including the core charge. For an A starter I believe the boys are selling my rebuilds in the $145-165 range($75.00 added for core charge which is returned when you send in old starter). You would get the core back since I can re-man the armature for $35-45 my cost. As for breaking shafts, although it does not happen alot, My guess is your starter does not have the intermediate bushing to help keep the force on the armature even while torquing the flywheel. That middle bushing helps alot. I would guess I see a broken armature 1 out of every 80 I rebuild. Any other questions just post back.

Take it and have it rebuilt. You may get an extra charge because your armature is no good but it will be cheaper and just as good if you get a good shop.

Shaft may have been bent or it may have been run with the starter loose and overloaded the Bendix.

It would not hurt to pull the plugs and turn the engine over by hand slowly to check the ring gear.

I'd go with the Napa. 200$ is a pretty good price. I've seen 'em as high as 350. For rebuild job the shaft would have to be in good condition.
