First off I'd like to state I'm not selling anything. Now that I've stated that I'll get to the question. A friend of mine has an M with a cracked head, that he doesn't need anymore he says if he can't sell it he'll send it to the scrap yard. I'd hate to see the tractor get scrapped if the smaller pieces were worth anything or there were a demand for some pieces. I guess my question is are the M's too common for the pieces such as the sheet metal, manifold and so forth to be worth anything? Like I said I'd hate for the tractor to go to the scrap yard when it has so many parts somebody could use. At the same time I don't want to waste my friend and mine's time pulling parts that aren't worth anything. Unfortunately for me buying the tractor and putting a used motor isn't an option for me right now.
Thanks for any help you guys can give me in advance.
Ross

Yes that tractor is worth more than scrap. The local salvage yard goes through M's and H's pretty quickly. If you were close to minnesota, I'd be interested in buying that M.

I'm afraid maybe people are getting the wrong opinion of what this tractor is like. I went and took some pictures of this tractor. First remember he did pull the motor to free the pistons that were stuck so the tractor is mostly disassembled, he does however have every part that is removed on the tractor. While I think another motor would have this tractor going in short order, I have to agree with my friend this is most likely a parts tractor but it does have numrous parts that are still usable. If somebody wants to repost the pictures in the discussion that'd be great.

If this M is still available, I'd be interested in it as well. Not too much of a trip for me to pick it up. Let me know.

Thanks, Chris Bean

If everything about tractor was in good running condition when head cracked salvage yard could probaly get at least $1000/1500 for parts from tractor depending on location. You could probaly sell enough through classified on this site to make it worth yout time if you wanted to bother with it. Just my 1 cent worth.

Ross, is there any possibility of getting a little further info on this tractor; what part of the US is it in and what condition is it in? Parts, original, are definitely in need of and worth some $, but it is like trying to sell anything, you need to get to the right market. The other part of the story is how long are we willing to hold onto stuff and what stuff to hold onto.

Unless other parts are ruined it would be worth more than junk price.Worst thing is distance
from someone interested, the way fuel cost. What state is tractor in?

West Central Illinois, I don't think he want's much for it same as scrap price. I think time is more the issue as far as getting it moved. As I said the property the tractors stored at has been sold and he has to be out before too long

I'm sure he'd be willing to, but I guess he hasn't had any takers.

Why doesn't your friend just replace the head?

The head was cracked when one of my friends hired hands shut the engine down too fast after disking with it. The tractor was parked until they could mess with it, in the mean time the motor stuck and and ruined the sleeves. My friend has somewhere between 10-12 tractors ranging from letter series farmalls up to a fairly new JD 4wd hence he really doesn't need it. We need to move the tractor out of a shed on a property he just sold. He figures since the rebuild including machine work will be easily pushing 1000 it's not worth his effort. Ross

I don't have an M yet, and I'm sure I could find a head for this one. Let me know if it's still for sale and what the asking price is. I'm in northern Indiana, and could haul it myself. I could go after it within a week or so, if that's soon enough.

I'd be sorry to see it broken up for parts if it's saveable.

A cracked head is a easy fix.
