Does anyone have experience with the input shaft of a Super M. I have received a replacement small or front bearing from a large IH dealer that does not have a snap ring groove in the outer race of the bearing. The front bearing retainer and the input shaft housing are grooved for a snap ring and that is the only way the input shaft will be positively positioned. I need better information than I have from the service manual I purchased. It does not list a snap ring but I have seen this level of detail omitted before.
Please help me if you can.
Mike

I'm working on the input shaft assembly to the main transmission. The input shaft is in it's own housing which bolts into the main case. The front bearing of the old bearing had a groove on the OD. I believe that the groove was to hold an outside snapring which would position the input shaft. The input shaft bearing retainer is designed for a snapring on the OD of the bearing. The bearing which I purchased from Gruenwald in Wisconsin does not have the groove on the OD of the bearing. Do you have any information which shows a snapring to position the input shaft in the front bearing housing assembly. If you do could you please let me know how I could get a copy or any more information.

Thanks, Mike

Mike, there are 3 shafts in this transmission main shaft with all the gears on it has a snap ring located near the rear bearing you will need a puller between the bearing cage and the bevel pinion to remove.Next is the countershaft NOTE.The ipto extension shaft must be removed to service the counter shaft. There is a rear bearing retainer strap located below the transmission main shaft bevel gear.NOTE when you drive out the countershaft block the gears or you will screw them up. The only snap rings in this transmission are on the rear main shaft and the rear counter shaft. You may have been dealing with a inexperenced counter man and have the wrong bearing.Hope this helps.Paul.

I understand all of the information you have provided. I am working on the input shaft off the clutch only. The rest of the parts have already been reassembled. The input shaft assembly I am working on is built up on the bench and then installed in the transmission case. The only way that the input shaft is positioned is with a snapring on the OD of the outer race of the front input shaft bearing. I am convinced that this retainer ring is needed. I would like to find a picture of this area of the transmission for a Super M. The transmission I have has been abused for many years and the reason I have it apart is because it was so full of metal bearing parts that they were jamming in the cluster gear. For example, the pilot bearing that I removed from the transmission was a double row ball-bearing and the one I received from the dealer was a cylindrical bearing. This transmission has been repaired numerous times and I don't believe it has been assembled correctly for a while. Please reply with more information on this input shaft assembly.

Thanks, Mike

I think what you are talking about is the trans input shaft. If so you are right, the ring on bearing is what keeps shaft from going rearward.

Thank you for the information. My book does not show this level of detail. This is my fathers tractor and I need it to be right when I am done. The input shaft was not properly installed because the yoke retaining bolt was missing and the bearing spacer is worn from running loose between the bearings. I will check the length of the spacer before the final assembly. If the length is short it will reduce the sliding spline engagement. The input shaft is not in the best shape and reduced engagement is not good for my team. I will order a new bearing with the OD snap ring groove on Monday. The reason I kept asking is because I have worked on a few transmissions in my day. It did not make sense to provide a groove in the bearing retainer and the fact that the input shaft is not held in position by any other method. As I have worked on this project it seems not much is provided for detailed information on the transmissions. The parts are very difficult to obtain correctly. I have spent a lot of time sending things back that were incorrect. Thanks for your help.
