Ive been looking hard for a tractor & need some advice. I dont want to spend a fortune but want a decent tractor that I dont have to work on all the time. Messed with the letter series tractors a bunch but dont know much about the newer ones. Want about 95hp + and would like to get a front end loader for chores. Mostly going to be mowing & chore tractor but want something i can farm a few acres with later on. I dont really care what color it is as long as it is "american".. Looked at a 1086 that was CLEAN with 3900 hours....16,000 (no loader)also been considering a jd 4020 but they sure are high.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

buy the 1086 you will never want to look at a deere again-its very good on fuel and has great power.

I will probably get chastized by the IH guy's here but I would recommend against any of the 06 series or later IH tractors with a gear transmission for loader work. The problems encountered shifting from forward to reverse will drive you nuts with loader work. Only thing I can think of that would be worse is a 2 cyl JD.

A IH hydro would be ideal for loader work but if you are intending to do any tillage to speak of I think you will probably be disapointed. (I don't have any personal experience with IH hydros other than a friend I know has one). Condition of the trans can be kinda a problem and I think they are kinda spendy to fix.

For all around work I would suggest a deere with the synchro range trans. These make a nice loader tractor (we have a 3020 with loader). I like the synchro better than the power shift for loader work. The Shifts from forward to reverse are synchronized and all in a straight line with logical working speeds. The power shift you have to go through all the lower gears and it is a U shaped pattern.

Another tractor to consider if available in your area is a 70, 90, or 94 series Case with their 3 speed powershift. This unit has a inline shift pattern from forward to reverse. Relatively solid unit and can be bought a lot cheaper than equilivent Deere.

Know where there is a 1586 IHC for $4500.00. Runs great, needs paint, 1 window in cab. Located in western Oklahoma. Email me if you are interested. Tim

gorilla1, If you are in the 100 hp market there are other JD that are better a choice than a 4020.
My personal loader tractor is a 966 w/ a 2350 IH loader. I love it. It has no cab, has a fresh TA,clutch. weakest point on mine is the frontend!
OK,
JD, 4520,4620 in the 20 series will out preform a regular 4020. Be sure the tractor has a Powershift tranny. These tractors will have the heavier frontend. 4020 is a great tractor but, the front end isn't very good. And most 4020s have a million hrs on them, rebuilt 5 or 6 times

The newer series 4030/4230,4040/4240 same hp class with better refinements.
Got a 4230, straight 8 speed W/new Koyker loader
for my cousin last summer. Bought @ Amarillo,TX and delivered to Lampassas,TX $15,000, + - 500mi.
Only other modification we have done to it is loose the floation tractor tire on front, in favor of the airplane tires we have on it now. They will stand up to loader work better! 12ply, 220 MPH rated, You can't run a stob or something through it like regular tires. Hope this helps,
John A. OBTW.....call Fastline on Mon. and get on the mailing list.....it's better than the Sears Christmas Wishbook! They have a version that is state/region specific to you.....

There are a lot of 4020's out there for about half of the 16,000. ebay has 4 or 5 on right now, one has a loader. It's one heck of a tractor for the price, lots of power and very manueverable. 'Luck.

Hey Fred,
Glad to see more than just me is represented in North Central Texas. Now for the question at hand. A 4020 will serve you well, a 4030 or 4230 will get ya into a sound guard cab. if you go red, a 856 is a good choice, I personally don't like em because of the T/A's, heard about too much trouble from them. you can go up to a 886, 986, or a 1086 but I personall don't like the cabs, to me its just to awkward to get in and out of. If ya want a little more hoss, check into a 4430 Deere, sound guard cab and 125 turbo charged hosses! You could also possibly look into a 4320, which is basically a 4020 with a turbo on it, I'm sure its beefed up a little more as its around 115 hp or more. Hope some of this helps.

I'm about 60 miles north of Dallas. Just looked at the map, Lampasas is more central than north central, don't make any difference though, I wouldn't live any where else but TEXAS!!!!!
