The spring appears to be threaded on to a yoke. It looks like it's ajustable but the thing is siezed on there and I am afraid if I try to turn it too hard I'll bust the sping. Would a new shorter regular hardware store spring get me any more hp?

I have a 1940 H with that same type of spring, I was able to adjust mine to tighten it up and get the RPMs it was supposed to have. Also, the hole that the hooked end of the spring goes into gets worn out, it can be welded or brazed shut, and a new 1/4 inch hole drilled. It improved the governor quite a bit.

Nick,
I have a NOS gov. spring with the threaded on end that I'd sell ya. First let me take a pic of it tomorrow to make sure we are talking about the same thing. If you are interested, send me an email in the morning.

Nick if the spring is threaded on I would say it is not an IH govener. Saw many never saw that kind the IH spring just had hook on each end. I use to bend the hook on each end to get a little more rpm.

Take your old spring down to NAPA and get one of theirs the same size. It is a bit stiffer than the IH replacement and will give you several hundred more RPM's. If my memory is correct it is their # 34 spring.
