I'm looking at buying a IH 674 w/ a 2250 loader. Any pros/cons, tractor have any weak spots to look for? Are parts still readily available?

Hi 674D, the 239D was great engine. The weakness is hydraulic brakes and parking brake. If someone forgets to unlock parking brake and drives the tractor the lining of the parking brake ends up in the hydraulic oil causing clogged lines and valves. The hydraulic brakes are prone to seal failure on the mechanism under the batter box and then air gets in the system requiring frequent bleeding of the brakes. Must change hydraulic filters regularly and use only Hytran hydraulic fluid.
T/A could be a problem if equipped. This was extra cost option.

2250 loader is a good match for 674.

My 2 cents
JB

Hi JB, like you say brake and parking brake are problem on those tractor. Those tractor have a transfert pump, this pump supply oil to the brake circuit, this pump have a mesh strainer, who clogged by dirt, like brake band, in the oil. The flow is restricted and allow air to go in the brake system. Keep the oil clean an change the filter often. Instal a big red lamp closer the litle one, on the dash. It's prevent to drive the tractor with the parking brake on. Bernard le Mécano Québec Canada

Hi Bernard,
I sometimes get the gearbox oil pressure warning light on the dashboard of my 484 after I've been using the PTO a lot (for mowing). You said once that this is probably because of the transfer pump being worn and it cannot move the cooled oil from the back of the tractor up the gearbox quick enough (or something similar).
I've also heard that between the back and front compartments of the gearbox is a 'hole' that the oil can move through without requiring the transfer pump (so the warning light does not come on). This 'hole' is normally closed up by a plastic cap or similar but it can be removed to allow the oil to move freely. Apparently the only problem with this is that it can lead to the brakes being starved of oil on steep hills.
Have you heard of this?? If so, how easy is it to remove this 'cap'?

Hi Clanger, may be your transfert pump is worn. The return of the PTO circuit, go to the cooler then feed brake and lubricate upper shaft in the front gear-box ( 1234) The transfert pump give a back pressure to this circuit and lubricate pinion and bevel gear in rear housing, by a pipe below the tee where the sender is located. The overflow feed the main pump. If the transfert pump have not enough pressure, or flow, brake system don't work OK. If you have no much hill, you can remove the plug, as you say. It's a rubber plug, you have this one by the cover, on right side, in front of the rear axle. It's not a good idea, because the oil level is different in the 3 gear box. It's why you have to run the engine when you ckeck transmission oil level. On loader operation, when the transfert pump is worn, main pump may suck air because the rear housing gone empty. You may remove the plug in this case, but it's not like changing the pump. You may add 10 liters of oil when you remove the plug. Bernard le Mécano Québec Canada

Thanks for that info Bernard. I'll think about removing the plug..... but I will not rush into it!
