Actually it is only a little bit of a mystery, the Farmall H that I just bought for parts came with a starter with a reduction drive, this is a unit that fits between the starter and the nose, and is a planetary gear set-up. Question, am I correct in thinking that this is an M&W unit? Or did some other companies make these also? Could this have been standard equipment on any IH tractors? The starter was not on the tractor, it merely came with it.

i have several of these units. most of them were made by a&w, but m&w and tractor supply also sold these gear reduction units. these were designed to help start tractors that had higher compression pistons installed but the best thing that they are good for is breaking the spring on the bendix drive. if you look close you should be able to find a name cast on the housing.

Does the starter have a number tag? Some of the big diesels used those starters. Delco Remy made them.

There is no tag, nor can I find any type of number stamped into it. I am sure that it is a Delco, The main body of the starter is identical to that of an H or M, and the nose, starter drive, and drive end is also identical to an H or M. It mounts with only two bolts.

Some big trucks used them also. My crawler has 3 bolt mount. Can't do much without the number.
