Leaking Head Gasket?

I have a 53 Super A and I had the head off a couple of years ago and it hasn't been used very much since, until this winter. I'm beginning to wonder if the head gasket might be leaking. It overheats very quickly upon applying anything more than about 1/4 throttle or a heavy load. Also I'm getting little black spots all over the paint work. I can't see any bubbles in the radiator but with all the steam it's kind of hard to see anything. There also doesn't appear to be any great quantities of white smoke from the exhaust. What causes the spots or are they normal? Also what else should I check? Thanks, SAm in NS

There is an old trick I used to check for head crack/gasket leaks. Take the tractor to an auto shop with a smog check machine and have them "sniff" the radiator with the probe. If there is any reading at all, you have a problem with exhaust entering the cooling system. Good luck, Greg

Your Super A should have a water pump so I'd check to make sure it is working. Also check for defective thermostat as it could be stuck in the closed position. As far as the black spots, sould like your carb is possibly set to rich and it is spewing out through the exhaust along with carbon from the combustion chamber, manifold, and muffler. See if Dave's suggestion works as well. It may clear up after the re-torque of the head.

It has no water pump or thermostat so I doubt that's my problem. I'll probably try retorqueing the head soon. I don't think the carb is too rich because apart from the spots the exhaust is perfectly clear. Thanks, SAm in NS

White smoke indicates you are burning water or antifreez.. I'd take the valve cover off and retorque the head bolts, if that don't work, you need a new head gasket. Check the head out for cracks
