504 Clutch Problems Revisited

I posted a question about the clutch in my 504 about a week ago. Armed with the parts book I ordered from this web site and the I&T service manual, I think I will attempt to replace the clutch myself sometime over the next few months.

Before deciding to replace the clutch, I took several peoples advice, and I tried adjusting the clutch and TA per the IT manual, but the gears still grind when trying to shift, unless the tractor is idled down. I assume that the reason the gears are grinding is that the clutch is not releasing all the way when I push in the clutch pedal. What would be the likely cause?

Thanks again for any help.

Carl, before anything else, go to page 48 of your service manual and see if the adjustment to the pedal will help the problem. You can always set it back to where it is now if it doesn't, but it should be worth a try.

I've got to split my B 414 some day and will get some pro help. For a few hundred bucks, I'll get the experience to do all the little things that will make the job last for a few years. I really hate to do things twice.

'Luck. Joe

Carl, I hate to hear that you need to go through that process. Bob did suggest something that I hadn't thought of when we talked, the lubing of the mechanism and pilot bearing...does the tractor have an inspection plate on the bottom of the clutch housing?..we could get at my B250 through a belly pan and took care of the bearing and bent yoke there...good luck with it and don't be afraid to ask questions here..lots of great people with answers...Mike in Exeter Ontario

carl... i had a problem with a farmall 404 awhile back. it kept eating the pilot bearing and the clutch was draging a lot. i didnt get to see just what your problem was concerning you clutch other then draging. but this is what happened to mine.

i dont know if the 504 is similiar to the 404 but on the 404 there is a shaft from the clutch to the transmission.

there is a coupling on the shaft near the transmission. on the 404 it has 4 tapered bolts in it. it looks something like a universal joint but i think it is a flex joint.

in the center of this joint is a plate . it isnt exactly flat but its there for the ends of the couplings.

if you have the tractor split apart go a little further and check this coupling and plate.
on the 404 you have to split one more piece to get to the coupling. i dont know if you have to do this with the 504.

mark the coupling the way it came off for easy assembly .check the holes in the plate and the coupling joints for wear. it doesnt take much wear to cause the clutck problem.

those holes in mine were slightly egg shaped and that was all that was needed to cause the clutch and pilot bearing problem.

i put in a new plate and all seems fine now.
i hope that you find your problem and this is all that i can think of for your problem. hope it helps you. also check for bolt wear. the ones in the 404 are a tapered bolt. make a post on here to let us know how you are making out.
good luck.

Warped, cracked, or mis-adjusted pressure plate.

Warped lined plate, loose rivets on lined plate, lining broken or frayed on lined plate. Lined plate cracked near hub.

Badly worn splines on transmission input (pilot) shaft.

Bad or dry pilot bearing.
