The only external checks that you can make are the hydraulic pressure to the direct drive clutch pack, which should be in the 235-250PSI range, and the main clutch free petal travel. If the direct drive pressure is low check to see if the TA shift spool will move full travel. The spool should move down to where the snap ring just touches the spool cap and travel up so there is 1 and 1/8 inch height between spool cap and snap ring.

Can be weak MCV pump. At the time that it quits moveing,do you still have power steering? If not, probably the pump,if you do,probably TA.

If the T/A has been out for some time and Hdy. pressure is getting low it could be that the high side is slippng and it could be that there is oil on the clutch or it is plum wore out . i can't say for sure with out being there . So i guess it is time to do it all and cover all the bases.
