After ta overhaul I got in a hury and started the tractor without polarizing the generator. This is a 12 volt negative ground system should I disconnect the battery and reconnect before polarizing or just polarize it.Also when I pull out the switch the amp guage shows a slight charge, battery has since run down but if I turn on the lights with the tractor running amp guage shows almost full charge what gives?? Paul - Start with a charged 12 volt battery. Install it and connect the battery cables. Now with the engine off, take a short scrap of wire and briefly connect the BAT and GEN terminals on the regulator. Soon as you see a spark it's polarized.

Now turn on the lights (engine still off). If the ammeter needle shows charge with the lights on, it's wired up backward. To correct simply swap the wires on both terminals on the ammeter. (For safety, disconnect the battery ground cable while making the swap!)
