I had a problem on the Dodge 318 where the oil pressure light would not go on, but the pressure gauge dropped out of sight at idle.This is the same type problem I have with my 574 gas.
I changed the filter- it weighed a lot. The filter had little oil in it. Now, pressure seems to be maintained at normal.
In the event the filter will not pass oil, how did the engine stay lubed, even at high rpm ? Did the extreme cold contribute to this problem ? What will I have to inspect in the engine if I have found the source of the problem? What is the chance that the 574 has the same problem. I put 200 hours on it each year and it sits the rest of the time.

I think there is a bypass on some pressure lubed engines that, should the oil filter become plugged the bypass allows for flow of oil. Now the sensor that measures oil pressure is after the oil filter, it just goes to the gauge. The sensor that goes to the light, which was unaafected by the loss of pressure from the filter is at the pump I believe.

I think the lights are set so low that they are essentially useless as an indication instrument. By the time the light comes on, you need to head for the shop (for an overhaul). I think manufacturers do that so people aren't in the dealership all the time with blinking lights, being Detroit likes to recommend 5W-30 (to meet govt. mileage requirements)and that stuff sucks when it's even warm outside.

I have compared lighted engines (tractors and cars/trucks) to presure gauges on the same engine (I installed for troubleshooting). On the equipment I was measuring the pressure could get down to 10psig before the light would come on.

This is especially important on cars with high volume low pressure systems, which I think my Tahoe has. It has a gauge, and if you put 5 or 10w-30 in it and turn on the ac and run 5 miles down the interstate in the summer, then let it idle, the oil pressure is less than 20 psig. But if I put OIL,REAL OIL (15w-40 truck oil) in it it will hold 30 whereas it was at 50 when cranked....new truck.

Now my Dodge is a different story. That sucker is 6 years old and holds 60 psig of oil pressure regardless....only time it moves off 60 is when the ignition key is off and during the first few seconds when first started.
