I have a 986, 8 speed with torque amplifier. When under a heavy load with the T/A in low, the transmition slips. There is no noise or anything else unusual. I understand that loosing the T/A is not uncommon for an IH. Before I break into the tractor, how can I be sure it is the unit? I looked at the manual and the the friction plates are compressed by hydraulic pressure? Or does the hydraulic pressure release them? If anyone knows of a test to confirm the area which requires repair, it would be a great help. Thank
Don

we have a 3688 that does the same thing . I am almost positive that it is the ta. the nice thing is that it doesent render the tractor useless. you can just not use the ta.mine slips when tractor is cold, seems not so bad when it gets warmed up.also you can just be driving along on the low side and when you come to a hill it will start slipping as you described or more often it will just come to a complete stop. I just push the clutch in&out and it will start again still on low side .going to get it fixed someday but not today!

The low side of that TA is locked up by a mechanical sprag clutch. It is either locked solid and won't slip in the low side which is normal or the tractor will come to a complete stop if it is bad.It will not partially slip. The hydraulic clutch pack on the low side is to prevent free wheeling when you go down hill. The hyd clutch pack on the high side drives the tractor much like the main clutch does.If you are experiencing light sliping under heavy load on the low side I would look at the main clutch.Check free petal travel first. That is a 12 inch clutch in that tractor and they wear faster than the 14 inch clutch in their big brothers
