I have a Super MTA that is propane powered,
and ive been told the serial number matches a 1944-45 year tractor. Now the propane tank has a manufacture date of 1954, has the tank been added later, or is the tractor really been built in the 1950s? Thanks Jody

jody, Go check the Serial # on your tractor! Post it here so we can compare against the serial # list to the left.
Also post some pics of your tractor. Especially the Tank.
The tank on a SMTA-LP is different! A SMTA is a Stage III Super. The tank is a long-wise tank to the tractor. With a mono-valve assembly at the 11:00 position at the rear of the tank. The steering shaft goes through the tank...not over.
Where a SM....nonTA is a Stage II Super.
The tank is a cross-wise tank to the tractor. The steering shaft goes through the tank. The valve assemblies are at the rear of the tank, facing the seat.
It all depends on whether your tractor is actually a Stage III, SMTA-LP, or something else.
There were only 500 SMTA-LPs made so it may be fairly rare! It is just that most folks don't understand, like, care about, LPs. Ther are a few of us here on YT that really like this segment of Farmalls. There are only about 6 or so, that we know of, that we can prove are Stage III SMTA-LPs.
Again, get us the serial # some pics....ASAP.
I uncovered my email for you if you have questions, or if I can be of help!
Later,
John A.

Hi John, How are you? My LP SMTA has the valves at the bottom of the tank where the sediment bowel would be on a gas tractor, the fill valves are under there too. Cant seem to send that one email to you, keeps sending but you keeps not getting.
Van

Hi Van, This deal with our emails will eventually work itsself out. Still There is no hard and fast rule on the tank. Yet ! Just remember that ALL SMTAs are Stage III Supers. It doesn't matter what fuel powers it. The tank could have been replaced. Try posting a pic here on YT.
I did uncover my email here for another try from you.
Hope all is well with you and yours
Later,
John A.

SMTA serial #'s are 60001 through 83523.i think someone compared your serial # to a list of straight M #'s. M serial #'s for 1943 and 1944 were 60011 to 88084,so i'm thinking thats where the mix-up is.also, all your casting date codes should end with a Z(Z meaning 1954) hope this helps.

It is possible that you have a put together tractor. I have seen features on SM's, M's and even SMTA's that dated them to other year tractors. In one case their is a guy who converts disc brakes to band brakes, because people don't like the disc. I even know of several people who have converted 400's to MTA's because they bring more money. As far as the serial number, that part of the tractor is probably that year. My tow cents worth anyway.

The SMTA was only made in 1954 so it would be impossible for your SMTA to be a 1944-45 model. The Super M didn't come out until 1952.

If I remember correctly, the SMTA was offered in factory propane. The tank could be a replacement or the tractor could've been converted later. In Texas, there are a lot of propane tractors of all colors. It was a very popular conversion for about 20 -30 years when propane was cheaper than gas by about half or more. Try your local library to see if they have any books on tractors. You might get lucky and find a photo to compare yours to to see if it is factory or not.
