I have a June 11, 1968 Lincoln Electric "Lincwelder 225". This is a 225A DC welder with 50hz 30A 120V AC auxillary power. It is powered by a Onan CCKA twin cylinder gas motor. Oil bath air, rope start (no recoil the old wind up), and it has the optional idle control.

Welder starts on one or two pulls, runs great, welds great, paint is ok but faded. I had the heads off due to curiosity and I could find no evidence of wear on the cylinder walls. No shoulders, nothing but the some carbon on the head and piston. Oil gauge indicates 35psi.

A guy I know wants to buy it, and I suppose a new welder ($3000-$4000) would be nice-especially the electric start and all the modern features.

I could replace this welder with a unit for $1900 although I would be giving up 45 amps at the top end-more auxillary ac power however.

Anyone have an idea what I should ask for it?

I agree with Old. It's one nice running machine. I bought mine new back in '70. Never any problems. I have the electric start which is two 12 volt batteries in series turning the generator. Be careful not to run any induction type motors from the 50hz cycle, will end up smoking them. Made for brush type motors or lighting.

Is that 225 amps DC or 225 AC and something less on DC? That's a real well built welder and the Onan emgine is a good one but I'm thinking $1,500 may be pressing it as it's 35 years old. But, I haven't researched what they go for. Sad thing is, they ain't built like that no more.
Industrial engines: John Deere used the Kohler motor a lot and the Onan industrial in their 318 hydro lawn tractor for years. They built a 322 with a Yanmar 3 cylinder industrial water cooled plant one or two years and then went to Kawajaki. It takes $10,000 or more to get the Yanmar in a JD tractor now. I don't think they use Onan any more. That Onan motor and hydro made their 318 lawn tractors some of the most popular JD ever built. Dang good tractors even if they were green.

I have one of them also, if I were to sell it I wouldn't let it go for less then $1500 maybe even more, I don't use it much but when I need it, its sure nice to have.
