Well, JB I did what you said and it worked, however I found out why...The pedal mechanism is siezed and I broke the linkage when I engaged it, I got a short piece of 2"x4" and put it against the tractor frame and the broken shaft and pushed the differential out of "gear" and was able to finish my manure job. It looks like a couple of cotter pins and the broken linkage will drop out and then a visit to my local machine shop where Earl will look at it and then make me an identical one for less than half of the dealer price..I got a great machine shop guy who can fix anything reasonable priced so thanks for the information on the locking differential...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Hi Mike, glad you were able to get it to unlock.
It is almost impossible to turn with lock engaged.
We used the diff lock on the B414 a lot when we used it the wood lot in the winter. Should have bought a JD skidder to climb hills and haul logs. Again in the spring in our maple sugar bush. Then it would never be used again till the next winter and it would stick the first time it was used.

Spring must be coming to Exeter soon.

Michael: Those do tend to be a bit troublesome this time of year. JB's thoughts on lubrication may help that a bit. Only tractor I ever had with diff lock was 1066, it required lubrication from time to time or it would stick, in the engaged position. I always liked spray on graphite, as when it dries it doesn't collect dirt and dust. You breakage probably occured as it was not moving as freely as it should.
