I stepped on the locking differential pedal as I was backing up a grade with the manure spreader. The wheels locked and it worked perfectly, but when I released the pedal the locking diferential did not release, I haven't looked closely at it but could it be that since its not often used it just needs some lubricant on the pedal and shift mechanism? What would you do to get it to release?...Mike in Exeter Ontario

Michael: Which tractor was it? The 250 you have is prone to this if you happen to have presure on it one way or the other, by having the steering wheels in a turning position. Usually all it takes is turn the wheels quick the other way. This problem will be worse in cold weather or after periods on non use. I suspect also there must be a spring to make that disengage, as the 250 diff lock is nothing more than a collar on one splined shaft sliding onto another splined shaft when you step on pedal. You may have a broken spring in there. The two shafts in question are your brake shafts.

I think your 584 is a bit more sophisticated.

Hi Mike, I assume the problem is on your 584.
Have had same problem on 454 and 684. Quick fix is to reach down and pull up on pedal manaully and then while moving slowly forward in a straight line with the brake pedals unlocked tap one brake then the other. This should make the mechanism in the diff unlock.

Permanent fix is probably some lithium grease on the pedal and activating shaft.

Good luck
JB

JB, yes it was the 584, I should have said that in the beginning. I will try what you suggested, it was at the end of the day so I just pulled the tractor and spreader up to the barn and shut it off. I suspect since I haven't used the differential lock much that it is just dry or maybe has some rust on the pedal pivots. Thanks..... Mike in Exeter Ontario
