I have an (a) with a new generator and a new regulator also. The charging system was working good and then it stopped charging. I checked everthing out and found that if I moved the contact on the left side of the regulator ( after taking the cover off) That it would again begin to show a charge on the ammeter. after doing this it would charge on its own for about 30 seconds or so, and then quit again. the regulator probably ony has 10 hours of use on it, can it be adjusted or should I just get another new one ?

thanks in advance for your help !

I bought a re-built gen and new regulator for an A from a tractor supply and it was crap. I took the both of them to an older gentlemen who runs an electrical service business for starters alternators, generators. He cleaned the commutator, adjusted the gen brushes and adjusted the reg to the gen on his bench tester. He said it makes about 7 volts and 20 amps. $20 bill was well worth it.

Jonathan - Could be the regulator base is not grounded properly. Try running a wire directly from the regulator base to the grounded battery post. If that doesn't get it to charge, probably your new regulator has failed.

I searched the archives and found a post by Andrew on January 29, 2004. I am copying and pasting his entire post here. "With a short jumper wire, 'wipe' the "BAT" terminal to the "GEN" terminal on the voltage regulator. All you want to do is create a momentary spark when the two terminals are shorted together. I usually use an insulated 10 or 12 gauge wire for this. Insulated, only because most of the time there is close quarters between the teminals and bulkheads or sheet metal and it is mounted in a hard to see area. There are quite a few other posts about polarizing and how to do it, that may have explained the how and why better than I. Sorry for the late response, been getting a neighbors tractor running and relocating snow today. Good Luck"

Have you polarized it yet. There have been some discussions on this board about this. I had to do this when I replaced the regulator on my C and also when I had the generator re-built. My brother did it for me so I am not sure which leads to jumper. Bob M had a good explanation on here a couple of weeks ago.
