HI I have a wet-sleeve in my IH B-250 engine that won't come out- there's nothing to grab on b/c the bottom flange has broken off.

Any suggestions as how to get this sleeve out??

I'd heard that you could use a welder to crack the sleeve + pull it out, but I wanted to check with someone that has attemped this before I burn the sleeve into the block for good.

Again any ideas??

Thanks alot,
Paul

You can weld a zig zag up the side of the sleeve let it cool to the touch and it sould come right out. You need to turn up your welder hot and move quickly so you do not burn through the sleeve and weld it to the block. This works well.

The sleeves were pretty stuck in my B-275. I had a jack underneath pushing on the bottom of one of the sleeves. I jacked until the whole front of the tractor was off the ground and the stuck sleeve still held it. I then laid a board over part of the top of the block and hit it with a large hammer. Sleeve broke loose and tractor came quickly back down to earth. Another option is to borrow a real sleeve puller if you know of a shop that has one. It comes with a set of different sized adapters that will fit the sleeve bottom. It's threaded, and will pull just about any wet sleeve. Problem is you have to find a shop that not only has one, but is also willing to lend/rent it to you.

Thanks jdemaris, but a sleeve puller won't work out for this sleeve- there's nothing to pull from as it's broken off at the block....

What do you think of welding a bar to the inside of the sleeve, then pulling it out with a loader??!!

Thanks, Paul

I don't understand what you mean by not being able to use a sleeve puller. It there's any part of the sleeve there, a puller will work and it doesn't matter if the top is broken off it. A sleeve puller pulls from the bottom of the sleeve, not from the top. An adapter that has a slightly smaller outside diamater than the sleeve o.d. is installed at the bottom of said sleeve. A long threaded rod is attached, and . . . pulls the sleeve from on top of the block. You could make one if desired. Get a piece of steel that just barely grabs the walls of the sleeve - but it can't be any larger diameter than the sleeve because it has to travel through the block. Drill a hole in it, and then run a piece of threaded rod from it (at the bottom of the sleeve) out through the top. You also have to make an adapter that will fit on top that serves as a bushing that the entire sleeve can pass through. This has to have an i.d. large enough for the entire sleeve o.d. to pass through. On top of the bushing, you need a crossbar of some sort that the threaded rod can be attachend to. Then you put a nut on it, and pull the sleeve out. The sleeve will only come out until it hits the crossbar, so if you made the bushing 2" tall, the sleeve will move 2", etc. It's not matter, once you get it to move an 1/8", the rest will be easy. As far as your idea of welding a bar on it and then hooking a loader to it - how is that any different than what I described earlier, i.e. putting a hydraulic jack underneath and jacking on the sleeve bottom? I've rebuilt hundreds of diesels, and never had one yet that I couldn't get a sleeve out.

HI jdemaris

As I mentioned before in my last posting, there is NO sleeve showing BELOW the cast block of the engine- it must have broken off BELOW somehow befor I got it.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear enough, but I think this sleeve has got to be pulled out from the top because the bottom has nothing to pull from- that's why I suggested welding a bar to the top and pulling from there with a loader or something.

Unfortunately in this situation the sleeve puller or anthing which pulls from the bottom won't work at all unless there's somthing I'm missing in all of this.

Thanks for responding, have any more suggestions??

Paul

There were posts some time ago about welding in the sleeve to shrink it slightly and then remove it.
