Super C Engine Surge

Hello,
I could use some help in identifying a surge of my SC engine. The engine starts well, but only at close to full throttle. When running, the engine surges between near full throttle and minimum throttle. The cycle is about ten seconds. If the throttle position is reduced below about 2/3, the engine will cut off. I can hold the linkage between the governor and carb and the engine will maintain at a lower speed, but running rough. The engine will run as long as you want to allow it. Does this sound like a carb problem or a governor problem. Any help is appreciated.

Mike

Mike, sounds like your governor needs adjusted first, on a SC there is a screw on the front of the governor that if slightly out of adjustment, will allow it to surge like that...chased ours for a while a year or so ago, found that the spring under that screw had broken, and allowed the surge. Do you jave an IT maniual of servicemans guide? If not email me, CaseKub3@msn.com and I'll scan it to you. After that, a little carb tweaking may be needed. Pete

Sounds like you have a little problem with both the carb and the governor. The surging sounds like a gummed up governor or maybe weak springs. The running rough sounds like it could either be a simple carb adjustment or you may have to rebuild the carb.

My H used to surge and i fiddled with the carb. I also put a new governer spring in. if the spring is weak the governer can't maintain a steady rpm. also i found out the it was surging because the mixture was way to lean. try giving the carb. more gas. turn gas screw counter clockwise to richen the mixture.
