After rebuilging the engine on my 484 I`m a little worried to see that it`s still blowing slightly! It`s only done about an hours running since the rebuild (new sleeves/pistons & reworked head) - am I a little premature, should I allow more time before starting to look for problems?

Hi Clanger, about 30 years my Dad was plowing with the 454D and the fan belt broke. He didn't notice it immediately and it overheated and blew the O rings on one of the cylinders. It started to leak coolant into the oil. He had the IH dealer replace all the O rings. The mechanic replaced all the rings and honed the cylinders at the same time.
It took about 30 Hrs of running before it started to run correctly.

Your 484 should get better after some running.

Clanger, I know this is comparing apples and oranges But, This summer I rebuilt the motor in my truck. With about 300 miles on the new motor I drove it round trip about 160 miles to go deer hunting. Checked the oil and about died when I found it a quart low.A buddy of mine reminded me that I had used cromoly rings and that they take a long time to seat. It kept useing oil till I had about 3000 miles on it. Can't tell it uses a drop now. Relax. I'm sure it will be fine.

Patience! It'll be okay. As long as you staggered the piston ring gaps, she'll seat in. I'd change the oil since you've run it for an hour. Then change it at increasing intervals. It'll be fine. If it ran for 5 seconds after rebuild, you're golden.

forgot some details, the blowing is a little blowby from the crankase breather, but she does start better than ever now (on the second revolution - and it`s pretty cold here). Could the rings not be bedded in yet?
