Were there any Super M LP tractors produced at the factory? Are the heads and intakes any different? How can you tell if it's factory or conversion?

Thanks in advance.

Lamont, The subject of SM and SMTA ....LPs are a fussy subject.
First let me back up and say There are NO factory LP Ms.
Now On the subject of SMs. There are 4 stages of the SM series according to Guy Fays book.
The Stage I SMs were only fueled in Gas and Diesel from the factory.
The Stage II SMs were the first to have Factory LP with the crosswise tank as Harold H. said!
Now here is were the gray area starts..... ..
The Stage III SMs.....A K A .....SMTA w/LPTO
Wheather fueled by Gas,Diesel, LP
From the factory Gas, Diesel & 500 LPs with Hi Alt engines. 2500 & 5000 ft models. These 500 SMTAs were outsourced to another company.
The tanks were Longwise tanks with a mono valve At the 11:00 position @ the rear of tank.
These tractors have the correct serial #s and Head casting #s.
There is some consensus that the 500 LP SMTA were prototypes of the Stage IV LP
Stage IV SMTA.....A K A .....Farmall 400 LP
Hope this helps.
John A.

Actually, Stage Is were produced in kerosene and distillate as well. There is no evidence that I have EVER seen within the IH paperwork that suggests that the "factory" LP tractors were outsourced for the conversions. Not saying it didn't happen, but there's plenty to suggest it was done in-house.

TheStage III SMTA-LPs is what I am talking about on being outsourced. That 500 LP tractors!
OBTW ....What in your opinion is the difference in the Stage III SMs amd The Stage IV....400?
Thank you Again,
John A.

This one is probably factory if I'm reading your info correctly. It does not have a TA. The tank is crosswise with the steering shaft running through the tank. The valves are located on the back of the tank just ahead of and below the steering wheel. Are there head numbers that I could check? It seems to be really strong. Good brakes. Fair tires. Fair metal. Good tranny. Its it worth $1750.00?

Thanks,

Lamont

Lamont, Sounds like you got a Stage II SM there! Use Guy Fays book to desifer the Serial # and pre & Sufix Letters that tell you about the tractor.
The price is reletive....If it is me, Run your hands into your pockets, kick at the dirt, shake your head from side to side and grimmis your face.and tell the owner you got $1000, cash, today and you will take this headache off his hands. He should counter, then you , then him. Hopefully you get it for less than his asking price. If he gets insulted by your low offer, he will get uninsulted as the counters get closer to what he will take.
Good Luck,
John A.

Factory Super M LPG tractors have a crossways mounted tank. Conversion LPG systems generally have a lengthways mounted tank. I think factory LPG SM's had a higher compression ratio. Starting with the 400's the high compression LPG head had different valves with valve rotators.
