On my 47 farmall M i noticed that once in a while smoke would come out of the air cleaner at start up. The hood also has oil on it and i can see were it is dripping from the screen on the air cleaner. What is causing this and how can i get it to stop? Thanks for the help.

For what it's worth, my M fires backward at shut down sometimes too. Bad plugs will do that too.

Two things. One it sounds like your timing may be to advanced. This causes the tractor to fire to early and the engine to kick backwards and fire through the carburator. I also have a tractor that will fire and spin backwards on shut down occationally. This causes oil to blow back up through the oil bath aircleaner. I think if you do not overfill the oil bowl it shouldn't happen. If you don't overfill the bowl, it should stop blowing oil out of the aircleaner if the engine happens to fire back through the intake. Hope that helps.
