My '55 400 has some problems with the one break. When you are going around the place in 4th or lower, and you hit the left break, it completely locks up, and wont let go until you put it in reverse and break it loose with a hard jerk. I was going down the hiway, and the break started coming on with out me hitting the pedal, it started boging down for about 100 ft, and then came loose, and swayed hard to the right, just like the break was catching. I have taken both breaks off last month with the same problem, and no noticeable problems, what is the next step?

My experience with IH disk brakes is that after you rebuild them if you set them up too tight they will cause heat and expand and get tight just driving. Set them loose if you put on new pads until they have had time to break in and get some of the (fuzz) off the facings. Also check the splines, remove any rust, place a light coat of grease and then remove the grease, and the linings will move on the splines without hanging up. Not one of IH's best idea until they updated them with removable shims later sieries.

Bryce, the previous posts have some good suggestions to follow. In addition, check the splines on the shaft. If they are worn considerably, there is the possibility that this condition will also contribute to the brake locking. Remove the burrs with a file or die grinder. What I finally did on my SMTA to remedy this was to machine about .020 off of the brake housing edge that mates to the tractor. The metal mating surfaces for the brake discs on the housing and tractor wear from years of use. As a consequence, the linkage is adjusted to compensate and even with new discs installed, the brake assembly travels what I will call "over center" and contributes to the locking up scenario. To reduce this excess travel of the assembly, machining off .020 will accomplish this. Keep us posted. Tom

This has been on the site a few times. Sounds like you have a stuck shaft problem. The clutch and both brakes use the same shaft. Pull the right pedals off and clean out the gunk grease. Makes a good glue. Next is linkage problems. When you take the brakes totaly apart did you clean out the tapered slots where the balls ride? They must be spotless. A small dab of hi-temp grease roll the balls around in your hand for a lite coating. Make sure you are not missing the little coiled springs that pull the plates together. Also make sure your out side return springs are good and strong. Rust will kill them. There should also be maybe 1/2 to 3/4 " free play between the edge of your platform and the cast frame of the pedal. I know there are other things but these are the real common ones. Jeff

The next step is to take a BREAK from driving it and dig into the BRAKES again. To continue driving it like it is will certainly lead to a serious problem.

It sounds like the brake actuator is gummed up and not allowing the balls to return to the low spot in the egg shaped hollow on each side of the actuators thus keeping your brakes activated. Remove the brake housing covers and pull out the actuators. There will be two very stout and short springs holding the two halves of the actuators together. The balls are inside of these halves. If the balls are not shiny and smooth you should replace them. Make sure you clean the gunk out of the egg shaped hollows on the insides of the actuator halves. When you reinstall the balls, lightly lubricate them with lithium grease. Also make sure the brake discs are not soaked with lube oil/hytran and if they are check the brake shaft seals for need of replacement. If the discs are soaked with lube replace them as well. Also check the surfaces of the inner brake drum (Bearing retianer) and the outer brake housing for rust, cracks, etc.
