1066 won't start

Put a cam and main bearings in our 1066. Got it back together today and can't get it to fire without ether. Cracked the injector lines and getting diesel to all injectors.

Injector pump gear got unmeshed with the idler when we pulled the front cover off. So I am suspecting I am out of time. However, when I put the engine at 18 on the flywheel to check the timing of the pump, the pointer and mark are almost right on. Off by less than the width of the pointer. Since the pointer on the flywheel has a slight bit of play to it, you can get the pointer and mark on the pump, to match up with the pointer and 18 on the flywheel.

How exact is the timing? Is that the culprit, or do you guys have any other ideas? Thanks.

By the way, as was pointed out earlier, I am not an IH mechanic, but would gladly take the advice of one, shade tree or otherwise.

Thanks also to the IHC DOC. It was 180 off. I turned it a full revolution, put it back on, and she purrs like a kitten. What happened was that it split a push rod. No one had ever seen it happen, no one knows why. There were two bad valve rotators in the head, so while we were waiting on it, we put a cam and mains in it. It had new rings, pistons, sleeves, and rods 800 hours ago. Lets hope for a long life from now on.

Thanks again guys.

DAN: YOU HAVE THE INJECTION PUMP 180 DEGREES OUT OF TIME ... AS LONG AS YOU PUT THE TIMING MARKS ON THE CRANK TO THE CAMSHAFT CORRECT YOU CAN STILL BE OUT ON THE INJ. PUMP. BRING TO 18 DEG. BTDC THEN TAKE INJECTION PUMP GEAR OF AND TURN THE NUT WITH 7/8 SOCKET CLOCKWISE UNTIL POINTER ON PUMP AND SCRIBE MARK ON HUB ALIGN UP.. 28 YEAR IH MECH. THEY CALL ME THE IH/DOC

Dan,

Try pulling the pump out and turning it a full turn and lining up the marks again. I put a pump on our 966 it did the same thing. The book said to line up the pointer and try starting if the engine will not start turn a full turn and try again and it worked. The pump gear turns the same speed as the crankshaft and it must be geared down inside the pump itself. I hope this helps.
