I have had an H for just a short while and also have an A. The H sounds like it is missing while running and it gets worse the hotter it gets. I noticed the plug wires on the distributer is in a diffrent location than my A. The firing order is the same so wouldnt the wires need to be in the same location on the cap. The A runs excellent so I figured they are right. The H does fire up easily. Someone told me if they were not right that the H wouldnt crank up so easy.(no backfiring)just misses. Should I rearrange the wires and see what happens?

My guess is you have a cracked coil. Start the motor in pitch dark and you will probably see sparks from the side terminals to the primary terminal. If so, you need a new coil. Theory is higher temperature of running expands an existing crack open enough to allow the shorting that will not occur on a cold engine. Same check will identify a cracked distributor cap....Wayne

Hey thanks for the comments. I do own a green tractor also and love to hear it run and pull. The saying is right nothing runs like a deere. I do like the farmalls or I wouldnt have two of them.

That doesn't sound like your problem. If it misses after it warms up, I'd check the plugs, and maybe the points & condenser also. It sounds like went the plug warms up it starts to fail. It's a common problem.
The order for both tractors is the same. 1, 3,4,2. Check where the rotor is when it should fire cyl 1. One or the other could have been installed 180 deg off. It will still run alright, as long as you realize it and run the wires correctly. The #1 should be at the front outside "corner".

You know those guys with the green tractors are confused a lot anyway. Exactly how can you tell when
a JD is missing. I guess when it isn't where it broke down. Why did he post a JD question on an IH board anyway?

This is the Farmall and IHC discussion board. Why would he ask about a green tractor here? After all, those other As and Hs always sound like they are missing.

It doesn't matter if you have a distributor or a mag., the firing order should be 1342, starting from the number 1 position on the cap. All of the Farmall gasoline engines run clockwise and the letter diesels run counterclockwise. To set the firing order remove the #1 plug and raise the cylinder to the top on the compression stroke. This you will know because it blows out air on compression. You can hear it and feel it. Double check it with a bent wire through the plug hole and you can feel the piston in the up position. Now replace the wires as described. You should be good to go. If you still have problems look elsewhere.

Check in what direction your rotor turns on each tractor. My wd6 rotates counterclockwise and my w400 rotates clockwise. Assumed they were the same, I was pretty emabrresed when i found the problem. Work from your #1 on the cap and depending on rotor direction arrange plug wires for 1342

Probably has nothing to do with the ignition, sounds like maybe it is time for new manifold gaskets, the symptoms you describe are very classic examples of leaking intake gaskets.

I had the number two and three wires crossed and it does not run good at all. Lots of back firing, but it does start. Your distributor cap should have a one on the cap to tell you where to put the number one plug wire. On my H looking from the drivers seat the number one post is in the lower right. You might check your coil, if it's an old one, they break down after awhile and their not that expensive.
