after changing the oil and oil filter in my 1948 Farmall Cub and replacing the filter cover held in place by the filter through bolt the first several attempts at running the engine result in pressurized oil blowing out the gasket under the filter cover. Three or four of these attempts yield the same results and then for no reason that I can see it will then run normally with no blown filter cover gasket untill the next oil filter change. What is going on?

I use to have the same problem with my 154 Cub Loboy. Clean all of the old gasket off, use a razor blade. I use to use filters with the old style gasket, never had a problem. I got oil filters that used rubber gaskets (because my dealer went out of business), leaked all of the time from the very start. I now have another IH dealer and get my oil filters from them and specify the old style gasket. I order extra and keep a few on hand just in case. Even if the filter comes with rubber , I will order the old style gasket and only use them. I give the rubber ones away. Use the old style gasket!!!!.

I guess i don't know about the Cub but in the other farmalls the gasket goes in a grove and lots of times the old hardened gasket is still down in the grove with a new on on top of it.
