Year of WD9

I was wondering if anyone could give an estimation of the year on a WD9. The person I am dealing with cannot find the serial # tag but can find some casting numbers. The three that he has are 88-66-DE and 6-6-X which are on the right side in front of the brakes and the third number is 8856DB with is on top of the bell housing. I know this is hard to judge a year by but if someone can give me a rough idea that would be appreciated. Also what kind of oil does one use in these gas-starting diesels?

Found out the serial number on the WD9 in question. It is WDCB64142W12B. I am thinking this was one of the last ones before the super series so is it a 53? What do the other letters stand for?

I,m not sure but the 6-6-x might mean June 6,1952 according to data book. I have a 52 WD-9, serial tag should be under fuel tank on front tank support on rt side. I use Rotella 15-40 in mine.

Corey: I will be following this post with great interest.

I bought a W-9 at an auction last August. The auction flyer listed the W-9 as a 1950 model year with S/N 8866DE. My brother says, however, that the casting codes on the W-9 denote this tractor as a 1947. Where the seller came up with 8866DE I do not know. I have not looked.

Due to forgetfulness, laziness, and the tractor being parked 4 miles from my home, I have not attempted to look at the data plate that is supposed to be on the gas tank support bracket.

I am now armed with data books and hope to get this resolved soon. In the meantime, I will be watching this thread.

Thanks for the info, I was misdirecting him on the location of the serial plate, I assumed it was on the clutch housing like all the other IHs. I will tell him to look at the support bracket under the tank and follow up with everyone on what I find out.
Thanks
