I just purchased a 986. The tractor runs great and starts right up. I do not know exactly how many hours are on the motor because the tach does not work. It is showing 6500 hrs. The motor does have more blow by than usual...I would think. My question is..How much longer can I count on the motor, and how hard is it to rebuild? Are there any other things I need to watch for on the tractor? Thanks in advance.

I'd say it will probably run as long as you are willing to dump oil in it. Only trouble we've had on our 786 that you might have (shift linkages & basic fuel line setup) is the snapring groove on the end of the shaft for the H/L/R/Park lever( is that common or did we get a friday shaft??) and the fuel line gels easy in winter being back away from the engine heat, be sure to use fuel treatment.

It is hard to get mine out of park. Everything else shifts well. I left it in neutral and sprayed some lubricant on the mechanism that keeps it there in park and hasn't seemed to help. It is pretty dirty though. I just pull hard and it comes out.

our 786 had a cover "added" to the fender when we were having the linkage trouble. I think mechanically the 86 and 66 series are real similar.

Brad; We had a 706 with the ger.deisel with about 7400 hrs on it. It was getting some blowby. It was not an oilburner but oil got dirty sooner then I thought it would. Had a retirement sale and moved south.
