The M is very hard to start and requires choked for up to 10 minutes. This is in the high school shop. Any ideas? is this normal? It is a 6 volt system. Thanks

Open the high speed mixture screw one full turn.

If it's cold blooded, that points to fuel supply first. It probably runs rough, too. I'd go through the carb first. Rebuild kits are cheap and easy. Then I'd check your timing, advance, etc. Basically tune the carb settings & timing.

I just dealt with this problem with my M. It finally would not start. What I found was a broken spring on the weights in the distributor and the post they set over were worn 1/2 the way through. I replaced it with another distributor and she fired on the 2nd crank and runs and starts much much much better. New parts can be found and replaced with ease. Just my experience. -

Disconnect the fuel line to the carb, clean the screen in the carb where the fuel line connects. If you don't get a good stream of gas coming out of the fuel line at this point, check the screen at the sediment bowl. If you've gotten a lot of rust there, or even if you haven't, swipe a magnet around the inside of your fuel tank near the sediment bowl inlet, to pick up any loose rust flakes. I had a similar problem with my '47 H. After a few sweeps, I left the magnet in the tank, near the inlet, where it continues to catch the occasional flake.

Check to make sure that you are getting gas flow at the carb. Have you tried adjusting the carb.? If not, open the fuel jet screw.

Sounds like a bad carb and or an intke leak. I'd rebuild the carb and also check for a bad/loose intkae manafold, or intake gasket.
