Hi, my brother has 454, 495 and 684. The 454 has well over 15,000 Hrs. The 684 has about 7,000 hrs and the 495 has about 2,000 hrs. All are very good tractors. Have put two clutches in 454, two lip seals on injector pump shaft. 495 has had one clutch replaced and some front end problems because my brother didn't take my advice and put a 2250 Quick attach loader on it. This tractor starts good in the winter without being plugged in. The 684 has had one clutch. They all have had the Lucas generator/alternator replaced by a Delco alternator. 495 is used mainly as a loader tractor and runs every day to feed round bales or silage. Used to round bale in the summer and forage blower in the fall. 454 is used to haul wagons, manure, haybine, rake, snow blower, disk with 7ft JD disks. 684 is used for 3x16 IH plow, 10ft IH disks, IH 430 baler with thrower, manure spreader, IH combine, JD and NH forage harvesters.
All other parts have been routine maintance, filters, oil, batteries and tires.

He has had excellent service from these tractors.

I have heard good reports about the 84 series, but when I worked for the Kansas Ag Experiment Station, we bought a new 784. This tractor was a true lemon from day one. Injector pump needed repair after only a couple of hours, transmission shifter broke a pin inside that prevented it from shifting into 4th low range plus other transmission problems, front spindle broke (glad it wasn't in road gear at the time), Hydraulics would hang in the up position, other things I don't remember, we eventually sold it to the lowest bidder. The tractor only had a couple of thousand hours on it or less when we sold it and was well maintained and not abused. I know this goes against the grain of everything else I have heard, but it happened to us -- must have been a "Friday" tractor.

I have a 584, purchased new in 1985, It does the haybining and baling, draws the manure and blows snow, it is an outstanding tractor and I have not had a minute's trouble with it in the 19 years we have owned it. It starts in sub zero without block heater, is economical on fuel. When I have ground to turn it pulls 3x16 and plays with 10'disc and field cultivator and section harrows. It is a great utility tractor and my main tractor on my 100 acre hobby farm. It gets help from an M, 2 H's and a B250 and a Case310. It was rated at 52 HP. My friends up the road have JD's and they can't believe how this tractor will start and go in cold weather. Their 1830 and 2030 have to be plugged in to start even in the fall of the year. I have had the trans drained and the tractor gone over at the dealer's. I replace the trans filter and screen regularly and do oil and fuel filters by the hours. I use diesel fuel conditioner to remove moisture, clean injectors and lubricate the pump and I do this on a regular basis. I believe we paid $15000 for this tractor new and according to the "Western Ontario Farmer" ads used 584's still bring $9500, there were two in this week's ads at that price. So in summary this tractor has spoiled me and a replacement would have a lot to live up to, they have held their value significantly. I have not heard anything bad about 684, 784, 884. I saw an 884 with a cab that I was interested in, but it had high hours so I will hang onto the one I've got..... Mike in Exeter Ontario

Clint this 584 has a very few hours on it for its age, there were many years when I was teaching that it only got firewood and cut along the highway as a result I have about 1200 original hours on it and probably a third of those was blowing snow. The conditioner I use is called three in one but any conditioner is good. this product removes moisture, cleans injectors and lubes the pump. I also put a quart of oil in the fuel occasionaly..a few times a year...just good for the pump, a tractor dealer friend recommended a quart of Automatic Transmission fluid once in a while..its good for getting moisture out of the fuel system and it can't hurt anything..... ..Mike in Exeter Ontario

we had a 684 utility, nice tractor, high road speed, blew up and found the water jacket full of sawdust(dont know where it came from, ran hot from the day we got it @auction). Nice little tractor, great on the brushhog, manure spreader(don't think we stuck it anywhere), haybine, didn't do much else with it, brushhog was the only thing we ever hooked to the 3pt. Longevity or the rearend must not be a problem they still used it all the way up through the CIH 4240.
