504 Grinds when shifting

I recently bought an IH 504 in fair condition. When shifting with the engine at idle, the gears do not grind (or if they do not very much). However, if I attempt to shift when the engine speed is faster than idle, the gears grind significantly. Is that an indication that the tractor needs a new clutch?

Thanks.

Carl: You really don't describe exactly what you are doing. Are you trying to speed shift on the go? Or does this happen also when you stop and shift gears? Remember your Farmall is a straight cog transmission without synchromesh, so shifting on the go requires a bit of skill. If input and out put shafts aren't turning same speed the gears are going to grind. Only one option adjust your throttle to match the gear you are going to and double clutch. If you can master that one on a tractor you are a smart as well as agile man.

Thanks for responding Hugh. The grinding occurs when I am at a complete stop, again if the engine speed is something other than idle.

I have a copy of the IT service manual and it gives instructions for adjusting the clutch and TA. I will try that. Again thanks for responding, I am new to this board and didn't see the prior posts about adjusting the TA/clutch.

Carl.

Carl: These TA have to be quite exact on adjustment. I always said it was one the first items farmers were ever given where close on adjustment no longer counted. If you find when you get it to what you consider is exact and you think it may require a bit more, the first item I would try is shorten the short linkage from clutch shaft to TA shaft only 1/2 turn though. That is designed so it releases TA clutch at same time as main clutch. Be careful with that last bit of advice. If you think there is even a hint of slippage change it back. I wish you well.

Hugh,
Thanks again for your help. I will look at the IT manual this weekend and adjust the clutch and TA. I hope an adjustment is all that is required. I didn't buy the tractor with the expectation that I would have to have a clutch installed.

Thanks again,

Carl.

And if you're not trying to shift on the fly, but it's grinding anyway, you should start with the TA adjustment proceedure that's in the manual. I would try that before tearing it apart to replace something. I had a 504 that would try to keep crawling with the clutch pedal down, it definately would grind the gears untill I went through the TA adjustment process. That alone is worth the price of the manual, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Stan: You are so right, if that TA adjustment is out no one can shift them. Hadn't heard that one in awhile, so I thought all those lectures I and others had given last year on having TA and clutch adjusted "to the letter and by the book, close doesn't count", were becomming ingrained. I guess we shouldn't have assumed he had it adjusted properly.

However, even adjusted properly these aint no Honda Civic or F-150.

Hugh,
Good point there. I never have mastered the shifting on the go with crash box gear trannys. To me the grinding gears is sort of like chalk screeching on a blackboard. I can just imagine the teeth chipping off :(

Ben: I don't believe any of us have it 100%. It was quite easy with old trucks, at least you had momentum going for you. Not much of that in a Farmall under 20 mph.

Yep a new clutch or at least adjust the clutch. I am assuming this is a standard clutch/gear type of machine. Not familar with that model.
