I would like to know just how slow will a SMTA go in first gear/TA engaged. Better yet, teach me how to fish. What is the formula for calculating the ground speed? I assume it to be engine speed x TA reduction x gear reduction x circumference of the wheel, but then what? Oh it's been too long since I had to figure this stuff and the widget factory just numbs your brain. I'm trying to get down to 1/2 to 3/4 MPH to plant some vegetable. I think I see a hydro in my future--wait -- or is that a divorce? Thanks for any & all response.---Steve

Steve: Most of the Farmalls with 5 speed and TA were very close to being the same speed in the various gears. I think there were a few options between 2nd and 3rd and also 1st in the 560. I had a 300, 560 and a 656, and the 560 was noticably slower in 1st and 2 gear than the 300 and 656. I have a listing here for the 544 and it calls 1st 2.5 mph, 2nd 4 mph, 3rd 5 mph, 4th 7 mph and 5th 18 mph in direct drive and TA 1.75, 2.75, 3.25, 4.75 and 12.25 respectively. While I never did the kind of work your planning with a Farmall, I could see they would be a bit fast. If I were you I'd check out to see for sure if indeed there was such an option as slower lower gears for the 560. 560 gears should be interchangable with MTA. There was also a discussion on this forum some time ago on this very matter. I read it, but was not involved. I do remember enough to say check it out.

i used to use a smta on a 2 row tobbacco transplanter , plant spaceing was 14 inches & the kids had no problem keeping up - drove at a fast idle & had 14.9 rears

Maybe at idle it would go that slow but not throttled up for power. Even at idle it seems to go too fast sometimes...like when I have to wedge it into a small space for storage.

I believe the operator's manuel lists the speeds in different gears. I have an SMTA also. Low low is pretty slow, use it sometimes for baling heavy hay. Have never wanted to drive down the road in 5th with throttle open. Not sure how fast it is but too much for a tractor with a little wiggle in the front.

According to Guy Fay's Tractor Data Book the speed of the SMTA in 1st gear is 2 mph, 1 5/8 mph with torque back. That would be at rated rpm of 1,600 rpm. Unless you are driving something off of the pto then you should not have a problem getting down to less than 1 mph. You will not have rated horsepower at slower engine speeds but that should not be a problem with the SMTA. These old girls have amazing luggin power even at lower engine speeds. Unless there is a compelling reason to get down to less than 1 mph you will find that 1st gear does not step along very fast.
