Last night my mate and I finshed off the rebuild of my 484 (D179) engine.

We had already fitted new sleeves, pistons and big end shells. Last night we fitted the head which had been skimmed and the valves and seats recut (the guides were found to be OK).

After fitting all the ancilliaries I couldn't put it off any longer. I turned the key and after a couple of seconds diesel started squirting from the injector unions we had left loose to bleed them. We tightened the unions up and turned the key again..... .5 seconds later the she fired right up and quickly settled down to a smooth ryhthmic beat that I'd never heard before.
A quick check showed no leaks, no rattles and no more blowing from the breather. I am one happy camper!!

I've never done any work as major as this before and the feeling of satisfaction is tremendous. My thanks to everybody on this forum for passing on their advice and stories, it's a great source of inspiration.

Hi Clanger, great news and good work. When I have to assist my brother to do his 454 with a 179D, I will know who to email.

How about some more pictures of your rebuild?

Congrats
JB

Hi JB,
Yep got a few more pictures. When I've got time I'll finish the web page with the whole boring story and let you know where it is.
