The shop teacher and students who are fixing up my M are having problems setting the mag so it will run right. Any ideas, advice, places to look?
Thanks

Brad, something to keep in mind after following the advice below is that the H4 magneto should not be "tuned" with the engine running. It is a real temptation for guys that have fooled with automobile engines to start twisting on a mag. The mechanical advance is preset in the impulse mechanism and unless it fails to disengage (you will hear a constant clicking after startup), correct timing is achieved. Turning the mag from the TDC mark will only make the engine more difficult to start.

If the mag has a hot spark and you are able to start the tractor, not much to go wrong with it, or to adjust, except the point gap and the timing. I'm assuming you have a manual which tells you how to set the point gap and the timing. If all of that is ok, I would say your problem is something else. Do you have good copper plug wires?? If you are using spark suppression plug wires, throw them away and get some copper wires.

Brad:

Go to the link below then to the Blue Ribbon Service Manuals then to the GSS-5035 Servic Manual Magnetos. Your mag is covered in that manual.

Point gap is 0.013. Mag is set to fire when #1 (next to radiator) is at TDC, with the pointer at the 1st mark on the flywheel, if that is what you are asking.
