I noticed that I had one wheel bolt missing on the left side this weekend. I hear and feel a mild thump as the left rear wheel comes around and wonder if it is due to the bolt missing or is their something wrong inside the axel housing.

Can I get the bolt from a hardware store or is IH the only source for a IH 140 rear lug bolt?

If it is the bolts that attach the hub to the rim there is nothing special about them, hexagon or square headed will work , I have found that once bolts have come loose a few times you may as well throw them away and put new ones all the way around, that will end it for years. Loctite doesn't help when they get worn.....Mike in Exeter Ontario

If I remember correctly, that bolt has a taper on it to keep it tight and there are 6 of them per wheel. (somebody please straighten me out if that's not right) Use the correct bolt. If a hardware store has the right one, use it, but if they don't, get the right one from a Case/IH dealer.

If the other 5 bolts are tight, there should be no thump when the wheel rotates. If they are tight, and it still thumps, I would jack up that side and spin it slowly, listening for the noise. I'd suspect a bad bearing in the final drive.

The thumping noise is probably due to the missing bolt. Try tighting the remaining bolts, (wheel weight, disk to rim and lug bolts). This may prevent the noise until you can get a replacement for the missing bolt. Dan

Mark, I think you are talking about the square head bolts that attach the rim to the hub. If you are missing one bolt the thud you are hearing is tire rim hitting the hub because of the clearance between the bolts and hub. I have had mine loosten up on my tractor and had the same sound, get another bolt and tighten the others.

I took it to mean the bolts that attach the wheel to the axle, maybe you are right though. Not entirely clear.
