I recently purchased what I was told is a 1952 Farmall Super M tractor. I also purchased a tractor serial number manual but my serial number doesn't seem to be in the book. Can someone please help me identify what I have by the following info on the plate?

IH model SM serial number L-502566 JL

Thank you

I want to sincerely thank all of those who responded to my post "Identifying my Super M." You have all been most helpful. I'm sure I will have many more posts on this fine machine as the time goes by seeing as though this is my first tractor. Thanks again, all!

J stands for Rockford Clutch, and the L stands for high altitude cylinder head..

Bob: Don't let yourself be fooled by the letters at the end of number, they just identify optional equipment. I know J stands for Rockford clutch, not sure on the L. Does it have live hydraulics, etc.? If you go to left of this page, under Reasearch & Info, click on serial numbers, then Farmall, then go to model. The L in the beginning of your serial number stand for place of manufacture, Louisville in this case. Any tractors built by IH outside IL had a letter at brginning indicating where; B was British, A was Australia, L was Louisville, etc. I call it a 1953, but you check it out.

On p 23 of Ken Updike's little book, IH Tractor 1939-1985, he lists Louisville-built Super Ms: 501906 to 512541 as built in 1953. Doesn't yours fall between these two numbers?

Looking at the serial numbers listed on the left of the discussion page (under Research & Info) it would seem to me that you have a 1952 Super M. Hope i am right....check me out.

It's a 1953 -- also the starting serial for 1954 is listed as 600000 something on this site indicating IH built 88000 SM's at Louisville in 1953, actually they built less than 11000. Wonder how many more mistakes are in the list? Best to rely on info by Guy Fay and others. Been reading this board for maybe 5 years, this is the 1st time I ever looked at the list, and I found an obvious mistake.
