purpose of straight pipe on 282 diesel turbo kits

I have read that turbo kits for the 560,706,656 tractors with 282 diesel motors included a straight pipe and eliminated the muffler. What is the purpose of this? Also noticed that the 1206 come out with a straight pipe.Seems like this would make it louder. Can you use a muffler on a turbo tractor or does a muffler hold too much pressure back on the turbo keeping it from spinning fast enough?

A turbo silence the noice. I have a TD9 with turbo and straight pipe, it isnīt too loud. If you want a muffler, there is some nice full flow units often used on muscle cars. With higher backpressure, the turbo spinns slower. /Dennis

Yes, a muffler will increase the back pressure. A hydraulilc engineer would say it increases the "head". Turbines need to discharge to atmospheric pressure as soon as possible. This gives them a higher "Delta P" so that they can do more work when coupled to a compressor or other device.

Turbos extract wasted energy from the exhaust. They also scramble the exhaust pulses, or pressure waves, so that mufflers are not usually required.

I have turbos in three trucks. The mufflers have all "fallen off". I have never failed to get an inspection sticker on any of them.

if you do use a muffler get one that has a open tube down the center minimal backpressure. That or call Flowmaster.
