was wondering if any of you fine folks could tell me what all these careers are about in more depth then I most likely know.

Agricultural Business & Production
Forestry/Natural Resources/Wildland Firefighter
Wilderness Management
*Ironworker
*Sheet Metal
*Small engine mechanic

The starred ones I know i am taking and others that i already know what they are. I do know what these are but not good enough to make a choice if i wanna take them. I will be taking these in 4 years at 2 different technical colleges

My son graduated Abraham Baldwin College in Ga. last year. Has degrees in Ag Business and Forestry. He was offered a number of jobs prior to graduation. The college has people coming in from different organizations at graduation recruiting employees. So far he likes what he is doing and is being paid well and was able to stay in Ga. The down side is that, according to him, the classes were difficult and 4 years of it.

Hum, 4 years of classes, difficult subjects, result is high pay and what looks to be a good career. And you call this the down side?

I will give my educated opinions on all that you have mentioned. firefighter: government doesnt pay well enough. Forest management, dont know much about it but if Almighty God grows trees by himself man does a good job wrecking them. I think that forest management would be trying to prevent forest fires and stuff. AG business, HHHmmmmm tough to say. Iron worker: dangerous to climb heights and you are always out in the weather year round, if your working you would probably be a union man if this was your trade. Sheetmetal, HVAC guys do this and proabably make good money. (more on this in a minute) and last small engine mechanic, you would likely end up working at a tractor dealership if your lucky and you would have to find out what they get paid. The HVAC trade seems to be pretty good, The going rate for a company to come work on your furnace or air conditioner is $60/hour (minimum) of course you would only see about $25/hour + benefits. Which is still good money. The company that works on my building (I am the maint. supervisor at my place) charges $60/hour and they are always busy, and they only do commercial work.

Ag Business and Production sounds like Factory Farming 101. They have ruined farming. Farmers are much more economically inefficient now than they ever have been. It is like having an outside manager come in to run a specialized business, they have no idea what you do or why.

Firefighting - my best friends stepson (and the stepson's wife) were smoke jumpers and absolutely loved it. Now they have kids, but are still with the USFS. Low paid, exciting at times, dangerous.

Wilderness Management ? I thought that you were just supposed to leave alone.

Iron Worker - son in law is an iron worker, He is keeping busy (CT), but I'm not sure that everyone is.

Sheet metal - building trades have traditionally been good ways to make a living. They can be seasonal.

Small engine repair - everyone is busy working 70 hours a week (no overtime) and has no clue how to fix anything mechanical. Motorcycle mechanic friend says that working on bikes is the ruin of a good hobby. Probably don't make any money either. It is hard to find a good mechanic.

Try'em all, see what you like. If you do find something, you can get up every morning looking forward to going to work.

"Farmers are much more economically inefficient now than they ever have been"

Where did that totally stupid ignorant comment come from? And what do you base that "assumption" on?

First, let me ask how much you are making without a government subsidy check. Around here the average is half, or better, of the net is some sort of program payment. Second, why do you suppose that farmers have to run a couple thousand acres or have 3000 hogs to make a living today ? How did those old boys do it on half a section and just 120 hogs ? Third, do you suppose than anyone in the grocery store would notice if farm prices were twice as high ? Somebody else is getting 90 -95% of the price. Why don't you think that farmers have lost ground in the last 40 years ?

Don't let your radio do all your thinking.

Take them all. Also auto mech/tech. At least you will be able to diagnose and repair your own stuff. I'd try to stay away from wildfire control. You will work your a off and not get paid for what it' worth. also, like the guy/s before me said, talk to the counselor.
There is a Railroad course at Johnson County Tech in K.C. area.
good luck

Well, to tell you the truth it really depends on where you are going. If you are at a university, ie: Texas A&M University, the top three would be broken down in specific courses. At a tech college they will probably be more broad based knowledge and not as technical. Sounds crazy, but its the truth. You could take a bunch of ag economics and business courses and have an awesome knowledge of the subject or take a course at a tech college and get the general idea.

Hi FM,

I don't know where you are located, but I taught at a community college for many years before retiring. I'd think you would do well to go to the nearest community college and talk with the counselors there. One big decision will be whether you want to try to run your own business, or work for a company. Consider benefits, insurance, and retirement. An exciting time for you, and good luck! (By the way, there may be better sites for information than the Farmall/International discussion board).
