I'm 19 and trying to get into farming, i've got a 49 H that i've gone all through, and my brother has a 706, but i need a tractor to run my McCormic No. 15 chopper. the H will do it but i don't have the weight i'd like to handle a wagon, and i'm afraid the 706 will just make a mess out of the gearbox's, i was just wondering what you guys would recomend for this application, i was looking at a 560d but i know there'a a lot guys out there that don't like them, I'm looking to go with a deisel but don't have the cash for a newer tractor, any input would be appreciated

Hook the 706 to it. The gearbox on the machine will not be torn up by too big a tractor pulling it but may be damaged by overloading the chopper.

Hi, used to run our IH 15 chopper with 300U, then B414D in 2nd gear in corn but if you have hills the B414 is to light to pull wagon behind. Need 656, 674, 684 for HP and weight. Later we traded 15 for 16 and 16 required less HP as it had 9 knives to do the chopping as the 15 only had 6.

P.S. we had one of the very first IH 15 harvesters and I don't think IH made any $$ from
our machine. Chop corn for day, repair for a day.
IH made several design changes and eventually it was a good machine. My Dad chopped about 3 gathering chains, one cutter head knife broke and went through the drum. I could dismantel and assemble this machine in my sleep almost 50 years later.

I hope your 15 was one of the later ones not the design in progress model.

My rant for the evening.
JB

I picked up a 656 diesel for under $5000 and just love it.

Look into the B 414 thru 444s. Light horsepower but tough tractors. Should fit your budget.
