I can't start my H and I don't think it is because of the cold weather. My battery is no good and up until a month ago I was using the hand crank to start it(magneto). When cold if I half choke the carburetor it will start but then bog down, as if flooding. By the time I run around to open the choke the engine has stopped. If I crank again the engine doesn't even try. It has to sit awhile, several hours. There is some gas leakage from the bottom of the carburetor. Any advice?

When I got my 53 H, I changed pionts, plugs, condensor. Also I had to readjust the govenor. Took the carburator off, (had a buddy by the name of Bailey that couldn't see without his glasses) rebuild my carb. When I turn the fuel on to start it I go half throttle, because you need a mouthful of air to make the fuel fire. I live in the NE of the United States and I have started it in -15 weather. The only thing I had to do was choke about 2 cranks. After that she was running. As far as the carb goes had to pinch the float pin hole shut alittle bit (cause the pin came out and Bailey didn't see it). :-) Can't beat the H boys!!!!!

I assume you have it original with a 6 volt battery. When you buy a new battery get a 8 volt, you can run it on the 6 volt system. That is what i am going to do with my m. I only ckoke mine for 1 or 2 cranks.

My H requires absolutely no choke to start. It turns over maybe 3 or 4 times and starts right up. After it is running, I will need to feather the choke to keep it running for maybe 25 - 30 seconds, after that, no choke at all. I've even got a spring hooked to the butterfly on the carb that will not allow the choke to remain on - once you let go of the choke rod, the spring pulls the choke off. I've found out that mine, like most H's, is pretty warm-blooded. Larry

First off, new battery would be a good investment. No need to be hand cranking just because of a battery issue. Second off, you really only need to full choke about 2 strokes of the engine. Should fire and run after that. If it fires off on full choke, it will only run for minimal seconds before it floods itself out making it hard to restart if left at full choke. However, if really cold you may need to run at 1/4 or so choke untill it warms up a bit. With tractor not running, turn gas on. If gas runs out of bottom of carb you got either a float problem or stuck or bad needle valve in carb. If gas runs out of carb only after choking while trying to start, then clearly you are over choking which is the reason the gas is coming out of it. When hand cranking mine in cold weather, I full choke 2 cranks, then reduce choke to about 1/3 or 1/4 and then crank untill it fires with throttle opened up to about 1/4. Just my 2 cents.

my H wouldnt start one winter at all, pulling, cranking, pushing the button. it was like it was choked at all times...would blow raw gas out the muffler if pulled around....turned out the air cleaner bowl had some water in it, enough to ice up and block the air flow.

Get a good battery. Much easier to operate choke when right in the saddle. $30, maybe $40 for 5 to 10 years of no messing around...decent investment in my book. Good luck!
