Hi I am getting ready to rebolt my engine in and was wire brushing the rust (its been a while) off of the spline before trying the clutch disc on it. I noticed the spline won't turn. Shouldn't it turn, if the transmission is in neutral? I tried rocking the tractor in gear, with my hand on the spline, and nothing. I can hear it hitting gears when I try to turn it by hand, but it won't move any. Anybody know what's happening?

Check the brakes and make sure that the brake bands are not locked up or that the brakes are not engaged....I'm not sure, but I think that a regular A and Super A have the same brakes....take the brake covers off and see if your brakes are rusted to the brake drum....Hope all turns out OK....Sometimes a little patience can go a long way....Could have water in your rear differential that is frozen solid and preventing any movement....Anyway, good luck with your project.

Thanks for the replies. I did try to disengage the PTO, but it doesn't want to move. That is the little lever beside the driver's seat on left, correct? Anyway, I tried like heck, till the lever started to bend, but it won't move. I haven't ever seen the tractor roll; I got it with the engine frozen up. And I wish I never had, its been a pain since I got it.
I needed a loader around the property, and this one has a weird arm thing with a bucket on it that has hoses to it so I figured I'd rebuild the engine and never did in time, so things got rusty.
So, if the PTO is engaged the spline won't freewheel? Damn,I'd hate to take the transmission apart.
What a mess.
Anybody want a tractor . Cheap?

Are you serious about getting rid of the tractor? I am in need of a engine, and some other things. Please contact me if you want to get rid of it AS IS.

NJ: One would almost say it sounds like a gear is engaged, however when you rock the wheels you should see movment of the shaft if that were the case. How long has the tractor been apart? Was this a tractor you bought and pulled home from somewhere, and never had it going? How much do you know on history of this tractor? Have you tried engaging the pto and turning it with tractor transmission in neutral? Lets start from there. I see a number of possibilities. Answers to those questions could eliminate some.

Yes the spline should turn , If the tractor is in neutral. Try putting it in neutral and engaging the p.t.o, turn the p.t.o and see if the spline turns then.
