I need some advise. The knowledge on this site is amazing. I have torn down the engine of my 1945 A. I found the block was cracked between the middle two cylinders across the water jacket. The crack continues on both ends and stops at the sleeves. It is impossible to see how far into the block the crack goes however it has apparently been that way for some time; there is erosion across the top of the block from water jacket cell to the next, but does not extend to the sleeves. There is no external crack. I would like to have re-sleeved the engine and replace the pistons, rings and bearings. Now I have some concern as to whether I could remove the sleeves without further damaging the block. Question is, the sleeves look glazed but not scored. One of the pistons has some scoring. Can I hone the cylinders and purchase oversize pistons? I guess true to IHC history, the engine really ran well but missed occasionally and burned some oil. The rest of the tractor has been visually restored to parade quality, which is all I ever intended for the project. Along that same line, the tappets are also worn to the point that it would seem to be difficult to properly set lash after I’ve re-valved the head. Can the tappets be resurfaced or do they need to be replaced?

You guys seem to have experienced it all when it comes to these machines and your help would be greatly appreciated. My daddy was a Farmall dealer in Minnesota and I somewhat cut my teeth on them but I never got into a total engine overhaul.

Bob,
I had a similar problem with my B. For some time, it was leaking coolant into the oil. I finally pulled the head and discovered a large crack running from the inside of the #1 cylinder to the inside of the #4 cylinder. I didn't think the water was getting into the oil through the crack, so I called a Farmall mechanic friend. He said to drain the oil, pour coolant into the water jacket and place a container under the oil drain. The next day, the container contained several tablespoons of coolant. I repeated the test several times, with the same results each time. This meant the O rings on the wet sleeves were bad. My friend said that, years ago, they used to fix cracks like this in Allis Chalmers and Farmall blocks by drilling a hole through the entire block between cylinders #2 and #3 an inch or two below the top. Then they'd insert a threaded bolt. The old-timers would then put some sealer on the ends of the bolt, slip on a washer or two, then add a nut on each side and tighten them until the crack squeezed together. He said this would hold things in place for a long time. But because my O rings were leaking, I decided to find a used block and then had a machine shop build me a new engine. It cost 10 times more than I paid for the tractor when my wife bought it for me back in 1972, but I didn't care. After all those years of yeoman service, I just couldn't abandon the old girl in her time of need. Now she runs like a young colt.

As long as your A wasn't leaking coolant, you might get by with the old block. But I wouldn't weld anything. Several experts told me that once you weld a block, you have to have it re-machined to make sure everything is square and true. It's not cheap, they say. Try patching yours. It might last for years. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your advise. There seems to be an agreement that the block may be not worth saving.

Thanks again for the help.

A Chip off the Old Block; If you do decide to put in a good used engine block you may be ahead of the deal. Should be some tractor salvage locations in your area.
Your old engine block may make a good boat mooring if you have a lake in the area.
Hopefully this is not what its cracked up to be and you can still get years of service from your Farmall A. Use it for lighter duty work.

Go over to the Allis Chalmers page and ask the same question about a block being cracked on top. Most every on will tell you that ther blocks were cracked on top.

This is very true, the Allis blocks are all cracked so there's not much choice but to weld them up.

Now heres what you should do if you have the sleeves out you should talk nickel iron rod and weld it on the inside and the outside of the block and use a stick welder clean it up really good. Then with the engine get a baic engine kit. and fix it get all new sleeves nd stuff. If you have any problems e-mail me and give me your number and I will call you and help you because I have had all the problem you have had it in the past fixing the stuff for people. My e- mail adress is grahammacdonald@cox.net

It is pretty common for a block to crack between the sleeves. I dont think it is from freezing, I think it is from internal stress. If it is cracked at the bottom of the water jacket, it will need to be repaired as it will leak coolant into the water. A crack at the top usually wont affect things much. I have an Oliver that is cracked like that and it is used everyday and has never given any trouble. If the sleeves have a ridge around the top that you can catch with your fingernail, they are worn. If they don't I would just hone them out and reuse them. Especially if the tractor wont be used much. I think that there are O-rings around the sleeves on that motor and they should be replaced. The sleeves will need pulled for that.

I would be looking for a good block. It's not worth sinking money in a cracked block. Just my opinion and others may vary.

I have to agree with Lee... People have said on this forum before that if the crack is just on the outside water jacket, it can be repaired with JB Weld, but if the crack extends up in the area of the sleeves.. junk the block and look for a new one.

You can have the cracks welded,, as far as honing the sleeves, it can be done,I would take the block o a welding and machine shop and see what they say,,,or else buy a different block,,,Jim
