Bruce: 150 Years of IH calls the 31 an improved version of the 30. They would fit all H and M plus supers, 300, 400, 350 and 450. I doubt if they would work on much else, without a lot of fabrication. My dad bought one new on a 51 H, later moved it to Farmall 300. It had to have a spacer added about 2" thick where it bolted to rear axle housings, so cross member at front would clear front wheels. I think it was just the difference in larger front tires on 300, as I believe they are all same wheel base.

I had a model 31 on a Super H also. The easiest way for me to tell the difference is on the crossover support at the steering wheel; the model 30 has a vertical component (made of angle iron), where the model 31 is flat stock. They would interchange between the M/H and Supers M/H by just adding a 1" thick block on each side where it bolted to the front bolster on the H models because they were thinner than the M's. The extension blocks you are referring to are to take into acct the longer length of the MTA and the hundred series tractors because of the TA. I've never put them side by side to measure, but heard there is about 4" difference in length (which matched what I saw when moving a loader once from a 400 to a Super M).

Stan: I've never measured actual wheel base between letter series and TA equiped MTA, 300, 400, etc. Our loader from your description was a 31. I'm just going from memory on that spacer we had to add on front side of rear axle housing, at 2". I believe the grill guard with the pipe slides had to be modified a bit as well. 1955 and I was only 13 so am a bit rusty.

Hugh,
If you were (only) 13, I was (-6), so my memory is real foggy!! It's OK to be rusty, you've probably forgotten more than most of have learned so far ;) ;) I think that's why we enjoy reading your posts so much.

Stan: Then you will not mind jogging my memory. I was always of the opinion that H, M, SH, SM, SMTA, 300, 400, 350 and 450 were 90" wheelbase, with narrow front. Now I realize there will be some differences with wide fronts. I must admit I never measured. I do have a spec sheet here on a 544 being a later 4 cylinder tractor and it is 90" narrow front. I do know that when you get into the 460, 560, 656, etc they were 96", thus I was always thinking 90" for 4 cylinder and 96" for 6 cylinder.

When you get into the larger 6 cylinder tractors ie. 706, 756, 766 and larger they are over 100" and I expect that will all be wide front measurment. So, straighten me out, this is bugging me.

Hugh,
Like I said, I haven't checked them side by side (meaning I don't have one of each here to check at the moment). I do have a Super H and Super M on the place I can verify that 90" measurement with tomorrow, but will have to arrange with a local friend to measure his 400/450 later, unless someone else can help out there. I will post back tomorrow.

Hugh,
Just wanted to let you know I didn't forget about you. Spent two days looking for one of my tape measures and they're both awol!! This week is turning out to be very busy anyway. When I get back to this I will post a new thread cause this one will probably be gone. I did get the clutch and pressure plate out of my Super H last night at midnight though :) ? ;) ? :( What a chore when the loader arms are in the way of pulling the fork shaft out the side. Arggg!
