Thanks for your responses. Have following numbers
numbers: on chasssis lft side 8638DA, top of transmission 6832DA, engine 2*2*J, plate under
seat FAB 46,189. If this is a 41, could it
have been purchased in fall or winter of 40.
Old folks still say they had it in late 40 before
they moved to town in summer of 41. Again
thanks for all the info so far. Also trying
to find exact info. on decal plaecment. Tractor
had original battery box, draw bar, and belt pulley.

I have a 1939 "B". It was made in about the first month of production. The Serial Tag is located on the front of the clutch and brake pedal guard. As others have pointed out, except for the very early ones the serial tag is located under the seat.

It will NOT be on the clutch housing. If it is a very early model, it may be on the pedal guard below the brake pedals as ihkovas indicated. Otherwise, it should be on the inside of the left-hand seat bracket.
My '40 B serial number plate is on the seat bracket.
You can also check out the engine serial number, which is located on a raised boss on the right-hand side of the block, below #1 plug, kinda behind the magneto. On the early models, it would be the same as the tractor serial number.
'39's & '40's can also be indentified by the Dzeus fasteners on the hood, instead of the later "J" hooks.

McMurty and Dave, On the 1939 and early 1940's A and B's,the serial number plate was located on the front of the clutch and brake pedal guard. I'll try to post a picture later today.

Check out the casting dates... 3*16*J with the asterisks looking like slotted screws. The J stands for 1940, K is 1941. 'I' is "39" Keep in mind, that is was when the parts were cast...actual assembly came later...

Ser # is supposed to be on a plate on the inside of the left seat bracket... The H, M , and some others are on the trans housing...
