I have started reassembly on '49 super A and last night was attempting to adjust valve tappet gap as per manual. My fly wheel did not seem to have the mark(line with "DC/14") that the manual described. After much crawling around and cleaning I located a clear line which according to physical evidence, like piston location and valve closure seems to be the timing mark. Am I correct in assuming this is my mark, and if so why the difference from manual description.

An easy way to locate TDC (top dead center)compression # 1 is to watch the valves for #1 cylinder. Just as the exhaust valve closes and the intake valve starts to open, the piston should be at TDC at the end of the exhaust stroke. Now turn the crankshaft exactly 1 revolution and you will have the piston at TDC compression and you should be able to find your indexing marks very close to that point.
This method will allow you to adjust the valves if you turn the crankshaft 1/2 revolution to adjust the valves for each cylinder in the firing order. For example, find #1 cylinder TDC and adjust both valves; turn crankshaft 1/2 turn and adjust #3 cylinder valves; turn crankshaft 1/2 turn and adjust #4 cylinder valves; turn crankshaft 1/2 turn and adjust #2 cylinder valves. Turn crank 1/2 turn and you are back at #1 TDC and can set the ignition timing close enough that the engine will start.
Timing by "ear" is OK when you get enough experience but locating the TDC mark is the best way for a less experienced person.
I have explained this to hundreds of mechanics students in the past; it is still so enjoyable to hear an engine start up the first time after a rebuild!

Mike, I have a 49 Super A that I am in the process of restoring also. I had the same problem as you. Can you believe I didnt find that flywheel line until I started to dissassemble the engine and had the timong cover off and was able to line the king marks up on the crankshaft and the timing gear. I finally found the mark on the flywheel! Any way, what I did to help me with timing was file a small groove in the top of the crankshaft pulley TDC and painted that groove white. So anyway Mike be patient and you will find it, it is not very pronunced and you may have to do some cleaning down there to help find it.

scotty- I did find a line which seems to correspond to the timing mark as described in the manual, but again I did not uncover the "DC/14" inscribed on the line as the manual indicates. Did your wheel have number/letter combo or just a line?

Mike & Scotty: Would you guys believe this, I've never seen the timing marks on my Super A or 130. Now they are on front pulley for a 140 so hard not to see them. I've always set valve tappets by watching stroke of each rocker arm. On timing advance I do it all by ear. If I have to find TDC, number one plug has to come out to find out whether you are on compression or exhaust, so with a light you can see piston come to TDC. Don't try to make your job so difficult. By the way, I learned all of this from a guy that rebuilt about 6 Farmalls per year in the 1950s. IH dealer used to consult him for advise. His name was Russel. IH dealer told my dad once if he had a half dozen Russels around his district, he wouldn't even need a back shop.

Hugh- You should have seen me in the shop last night argueing with myself about how to proceed. I too have always set solid rod lifters by watching rockers or cam followers but was so anxious to use my new manuals that I just wouldn't rest until I had it figured to spec. Maybe that part of the manual will end up out in the brush next to the timing light. (I've also always favored timing by ear, or how 'bout the trick of setting a glass of water on the hood to get the smoothest idle)I'm still not sure whether I've found the right mark, little things like this can really drive a fella mad when theres enough tome to fret over them.

I have a 1940 (a) and my flywheel only has a straight mark etched in the flywheel, and it was difficult to find ! I also have a fly wheel off of a 1944 (a) that is for parts and it to only has the straight mark. I agree with the other post, once you find it mark the crank pulley ! It would be much easier to find, Why dident IH put marks on the crank puley ? It would have been much easier than removing that cover huh !@!
